Nursery FAQs

At what age can my son/daughter join a Nursery?

We welcome children from the age of 2 years old.

How soon should I register my child?

It is advisable to register within the first year of birth. Siblings will get priority. To register, please request a Nursery Registration Form from our Registrar (registrar@eatonsquareschools.com), complete the form and return it to the Registrar with the £100 registration fee.

When will I be offered a place?

For September entry, you will likely be offered a place about a year before. January and April places are offered with slightly less notice should places become available. You can then secure the place with a £3000 deposit which is returnable after your child leaves (assuming the full term’s notice is given).

How will my child be helped to settle?

We advise that each new child be left only for a very short time for the first day, extending the time as the child grows familiar with the surroundings and the staff. Each child has a key worker who will look after him/her on a one-to-one basis to increase their sense of security.

Before starting the Nursery, information is sent from the office in the form of a Welcome Pack. In this is a booklet to complete, with all your child’s likes and dislikes so that the staff can get to know their interests and preferences. That way they can engage them with a favourite activity on arrival.

The staff are made aware of all medical conditions and allergies to make sure the children are safe. You can send them in with a favourite toy to show their new friends if you wish. They will be taught how to make friends and play considerately with each other. Each class has a PTA rep who is the link between the School and the parents and helps new parents get to know each other.

Do I need to register for the main school at the same time?

No. Registering for the Nursery is also registering for the main School.

Is it automatic entry to the main school?

Our Nursery children have priority offers for the Prep School. There is an informal play-based assessment within their nursery setting (of which they are unaware) and places are offered to them before external candidates are invited to apply.

Can I visit the Nursery?

Of course! Just call the Registrar on 0207 225 3131 and book in a tour.

What does my child wear to Nursery?

Your child should come to school in their Eaton Square Nursery School tracksuit, along with the smock which is worn over their clothes. They will also be issued with a book bag, a sunhat and a drawstring bag for a change of clothes.

Should my child be ‘dry’?

All children attending morning sessions at Eaton Square Nursery Schools must be completely toilet trained and able to take themselves independently to the bathroom. At our Belgravia Nursery, afternoon children may come to school in ‘trainer pants’ to begin with but should be dry after the first month with us as there isn’t a nappy changing facility. At our Eccleston Nursery, the children in the under 3’s classroom have access to a nappy changing facility. We will, however, encourage all children who are ready to use the bathroom.

What does an average day consist of?

The children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum – commonly known as the EYFS. It is play-based learning and we focus on the 3 prime areas initially for the under 3’s– Physical Development, their Personal, Social and Emotional Development and their Communication and Language.

Once these are established, we move into the remaining four areas of the curriculum – Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Art and Design. The Nursery teams plan activities for all 7 areas of the curriculum and the children enjoy messy play, construction, mark making which progresses to writing, creative activities, cooking, music, dance, role play, gym etc. There are regular trips to our local libraries for storytelling and borrowing books to encourage early reading.

We recognise the importance of outdoor play and all our children play outside in the fresh air every day. We are fortunate to be near fantastic London parks and Squares which we visit frequently.

Are there any extras during the school day?

Parents can choose to add Ballet, Swimming, Karate, Phonics and Drama. These take place within the school day so collection time does not change.

What other events take place in the school year?

The nursery children are involved in all the school charitable fundraising events. We have an annual Christmas play in which all children take part. We have a swimming gala at the Queen Mother Sports Centre each summer and Sports Day in which all Nursery Schools compete with and against each other at Battersea Park.

What if English is not our first language?

We run small group sessions called ‘Chat and Play’ for our morning Nursery children who may require extra support with their spoken English. Speech and Language support is offered for any child who may require it.  We have a therapist on the staff team and she offers support on either a one-to-one basis or in a small group.
