English as an Additional Language
At Eaton Square Prep School, we welcome families from all language backgrounds. Our team works with pupils who speak another language at home to help them gain confidence and competency in spoken and written English.
We assess pupils’ language level as they join the school and can offer different provisions based on each child’s needs.
Support Types
- Targeted EAL Teaching: This includes one-to-one or small group lessons that explicitly focus on speaking, listening, literacy, and grammar. It supports pupils who are new to English as well as those who need help addressing common language misconceptions.
- In-Class Support: Pupils may receive support in class to help them access the curriculum alongside their peers or for subjects with specific vocabulary demands such as Geography or Maths.
In addition to these services, our team runs booster groups alongside year levels to bolster specific skills such as spelling or comprehension, assesses language proficiency, and helps to welcome newly arrived students.
We are proud of the rapid progress we see in our pupils at Eaton Square and the sense of community and belonging that we foster within our school.

Success Stories
Chloe joined our Reception class from China as an emergent English speaker, able to use basic greetings and respond to simple questions. With support from Miss Jo in small group sessions, she has made outstanding progress. She now holds detailed conversations, shares experiences, and uses a wide range of vocabulary. She has been awarded the Headteacher’s Award for language development and has won the Reception class prize.
Ena joined Eaton Square from Japan in the 2024–2025 academic year. She was not fluent in English upon arrival but attended weekly EAL sessions and comprehension booster groups. Her dedication and commitment to learning enabled her to thrive. Improvements in her comprehension and reading skills supported her success in examinations, including science. She achieved high marks across several subjects and was awarded the Junior Science Prize for 2025.
