Maria Hafalla

I was born in Manila, Philippines, and am proudly Filipino. My family moved to the United States when I was in primary school, and I grew up in Southern California. Education was always highly valued at home, and I was fortunate to have teachers who nurtured my love of learning and sparked my interest in Science.

I completed my B.S. in Biology at Mount St. Mary’s University as an NIH-MARC Fellow, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in the Molecular Oncology and Immunology Programme at New York University. After moving to London in 2005 with my husband, I worked for 10 years as a Research Fellow and Principal Scientific Officer at Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute, supported by fellowships from the USA National Science Foundation and the EU’s Marie Curie Scheme.

I later became the Francis Crick Institute’s first Lab Manager for Education and Science Educator, helping to develop and deliver specialist Science workshops for pupils from Year 1 through to senior school.

Since joining Eaton Square Prep School in 2022 as Head of Science and Deputy Head Academic, I have focused on making science engaging, hands-on, and relevant. Our pupils take part in exciting initiatives like the STEM Explorers Programme and Science Week. Outside of school, I enjoy reading and travelling with my family—experiences that often inspire new ideas for the classroom.
