GCSE Overview

Years 10 and 11

Starting the GCSE courses is an incredibly exciting time. You have the opportunity to both expand your interests and ambitions though taking on new subjects and to explore all of your studies at greater depth. Throughout this time, pupils begin to develop their independence of study. Our aim at Eaton Square Senior School is to develop young people who are knowledgeable, caring and successful with bright, enquiring minds. We want our pupils to have a positive approach to life, to broaden their horizons and to value the opportunity to think and study independently. We also value and appreciate the importance of achieving excellent academic results. We intend for our GCSE pupils to have access to exceptional facilities, resources and teaching that will allow them to thrive and fulfil their academic potential.

Academic Studies

All pupils at Eaton Square Senior will take our core GCSEs to prepare our pupils for life beyond school. They develop and secure the fundamental skills essential for future work and study. The range of option subjects allow pupils to develop their own interests and are the first step in them designing the shape of their own education.

The core GCSEs at Eaton Square Senior School are English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Combined Science (worth two GCSEs). This year, we offered a further seventeen options to our pupils to complement their core GCSEs, with most pupils aiming to complete 9 GCSEs in total by choosing four of the options in addition to the core offering.

The Wider Curriculum

In addition to GCSE programme, pupils are required to take other non-examination subjects as part of the wider curriculum. For this reason, physical education and games are compulsory subjects in which pupils may be given the opportunity to develop individual strengths as well as continuing to receive a good balance of team and individual physical activities. Wellbeing ensures that pupils develop the knowledge and skills that they can feel safe and confident in handling what life may throw at them, through a course that covers the RSE curriculum as one part of a much bigger picture where pupils learn to know how they are doing and feel about their lives

Beyond the classroom

At GCSE level more than ever, we expect our pupils to begin to take responsibility not only for their own learning, but also for their own growth and personal development. The school will provide many opportunities for pupils to develop their current interests and skills as well as developing new ones. Pupils are encouraged to take positions of responsibility and we aim to use London’s rich cultural heritage to ensure that pupils are exposed to as much of what our city has to offer as possible.

GCSE Results 2020

Our first cohort completed their GCSEs in 2020. We are incredibly proud of our pupils and their triumph through adversity in what was an exceptionally trying and strange year from the impacts of COVID in the summer term. As a non-selective school our focus is that every individual achieves as highly as they can.

Our pupils attained a pass rate comfortably greater than the national average, achieving 97.5% vs 76% (2020) and a 7-9 results of 47.1% vs 25.9% (2020) On average, pupils attained 8.4 GCSEs.
